Kim grew up in Korea, where she noticed that some women used tiny pieces of silver wire to hold their earrings in place while they were working, so she decided to create an earring that had a built-in wire so it would hold on tight while being comfortable. The earring were perfectly-sized for women's ears and they were made using recycled metals and eco-friendly methods. Kim opened her first store, Holfeun Market, in Seoul in 1987 and soon expanded to other countries.
