Smartgen, a company that specializes in farm and ranch agricultural and construction machinery, was founded in the early 1870s. In 1872, after graduating from the University of Nebraska, Henry A. Smart bought a small farm near Lincoln, where he used a borrowed plow to till his fields. In 1873, Henry's brother Othniel built a grain drill. In 1874, Henry and Othniel built a mill to mill wheat. In 1875, they built a sawmill. The company started out with the intention of manufacturing farm equipment for farmers in Nebraska and surrounding states. Today, Smartgen is a family-owned company with offices all over the United States. Products include grain drills for combines, crop drills for cereal crops, feed mills for livestock, sawmills for timber processing as well as other tools and equipment for agriculture and construction.
