These really work!

These Kozy Coats are very efficient. I have multiple tomato and pepper plants, but, as an experiment, I only used the KC’s around six plants. It was amazing to see the difference! The tomato plants that have the Coats grew more and are very robust. The pepper plants produced flowers and subsequent peppers much sooner than the “uncoated “ plants. It’s apparent my tomatoes and peppers love these Coats. Next year I will buy more so all my plants will benefit.

Got us through the very late freeze as well as off to a great start

I live and market garden in North Texas - Collin County. Started eggplants, tomatillow and tomatoes on 3-January in the light tray as usual. We had -5 temperatures for three days after Valentines Day. With a generator, we had power and the seedlings did well.Planted out in Kozy Coats 7-March after the ground warmed a bit. Everything continued to thrive in the garden. We generally have our last killing freeze the Monday after Easter. This year it was two weeks later, but everything was still sheltered. The tomatillos and tomatoes were blooming.Kozy Coats take awhile to set up and fill, but I have two bottomless 5 gallon buckets and 11 long spout funnels from the auto supply store (Probably available on Amazon) that ease the task. I put a 2.5' piece of rebar in each one as well due to our high winds. My husband gave me a battery operated fuel transfer pump that goes down into the tubes. It made short work of emptying them without heavy lifting.Thank you Amazon for having these.

Keeps plants from freezing, but watch out for trapped moisture!

I've been using these for a couple of months now, and find they do some things very well, some things not so well, and cause some problems of their own.SET-UP AND DURABILITY: The plastic is quite strong; stronger than I would have expected. I don't think I could tear it with my bare hands if I tried, and it would take a bit of work to puncture it even with an awl. I found set-up pretty easy, if a bit time-consuming. I didn't use the bucket method that both the instructions and many reviews recommend. Instead, I put a little water in to one of the compartments, then a little water in to an opposite compartment, then some water in to a compartment ninety degrees away from the other two, and so on, gradually adding water to widely spaced compartments. I suspect most people's approach is to try to fill one compartment, then the one next to it, and so on, but then there's nothing on the other side to support the weight, and it will fall over. By starting with just a bit of water in widely spaced compartments, it can support itself. Once there's a bit of water in all compartments, they can be filled, again starting with ones that are widely spaced from each other. The filled Kozy Coats are relatively easy to lift and carry from one place to another. They sometimes need to be coaxed a little to form the teepee shape (I found pushing the bottom of the compartments outward from the inside helped), but once they do, they're quite stable. Removing a Kozy Coat from a plant is a slightly scary operation, because it tends to close up a bit as it is lifted off, but I never actually had plants damaged by that.WHAT THEY DO WELL: They seem to be extremely effective at protecting against freezing, cold, and wind. I didn't use them during really hard freezes, but I suspect they could protect against temperatures dropping as low as 20 F overnight.WHAT THEY SAY THEY DO, BUT DON'T DO SO WELL: The instructions that come with it imply they can be used to warm the soil. I used a soil thermometer, and that wasn't happening for me. And I'm not surprised: the water that keeps the plants warm at night will also keep them cool during the day. Kozy Coats reduce temperature variation, so plants will be much warmer at night, but they don't raise average temperature much, if at all. There might be a bit of a "greenhouse effect," both from keeping IR from escaping and from reducing convective losses, but it's modest compared to, say, IRT plastic.WATCH OUT FOR: This was a damp, cool spring in the Northeast, where I am. And, as it turns out, these things are really good at trapping moisture. In a dry climate, that would be a good thing. But under these circumstances, there was condensation on the leaves all the time. In addition, the Kozy Coats quickly crowded my tomato plants, with leaves pushing against the walls, particularly near the top of the teepee shape. When I took the Coats off, those leaves soon developed big interveinal dead spots. I'm not sure if it was due to some kind of fungus, or stress (similar to what happens if plants are hardened off before taking them outside). They're recovering nicely, but I think if I'd left them in just a bit longer they might be in more trouble, and if there were any really bad fungi lurking around, this would have been their opportunity to get established on the plants.LATE SEASON USE? The instructions suggest the Kozy Coats could be used late in the season to protect plants from frost. For small plants, that would work, but I don't see how it would work for tomatoes, which are likely to be much taller than the Kozy Coats by then.BOTTOM LINE: The Kozy Coats were useful for me, and allowed me to get an early start on the season for my tomatoes. But they aren't a "set it and forget it" item; they need to be watched for moisture build-up.

Amazing results!

These are the best! My tomatoes positively leaped up despite 49 degree nights, as did my cukes. A little tricky to fill - I learned to start on one side and fill a tube halfway, then go to the opposite side and do the same. Then the other two quarters of the circle. After that it was easy. I was able to fit tomato cages inside them. I even balanced two of them on either end of an Earth Box, with stakes driven in the ground right next to the box for when they get tall enough. They are mosquito habitat, so i took a dunk and shredded it in little bits into the top of each tube.

These actually work

Planted tomato plants early because I thought spring was here. I did protect them with Kozy's.. The weather changed, but my plants lived snuggled in the Kozy's down to 23 degrees. Have used the same items for 3 years, and they seem nearly good as new.

I can have a real garden when I use Kozy Coats Garden Teepees!

Using Kozy Coats is a wall of protection around my new tomato plants! Very easy to use because once I plant them in the planter or ground, just place one of the Kozy Coats around it, fill the tubes with water. These do not "water" the plants (you must still water your garden). These walls of water will protect them from wind and temperature dips. I leave these walls up until it gets warm and past the temperature dips. When it is warm enough, I will cut one of the tubes all the way down and throw it away. They say you can reuse them but I have not been successful at reusing. I love my Tomato!

Difficult to remove without hurting the plant

We often get late frosts, so this seemed like a good solution. They are a little awkward to set up, but I got the hang of it after a few tomato plants. Because we can get both late frosts and early heat, it seemed a bit too warm inside the caots on the hot days, but did keep out the frost. The problem came when it was time to remove the the coats. The coat filled with water is quite heavy and if you pick it up with two hands, it tends to collapse on the other sides into the plants. Two of us finally managed to get them off with minimal plant damage, but it was not easy. Will probably not use them again this year.

Helped me Plant Tomatoes outside 40 days before last frost date

I decided to try to pair these with Tomato Accelerators and it enabled my plants to survive multiple frosts. I'm in Grow Zone 6b and planted my tomatoes in the ground March 20th. Last frost date in my area is May 1st.Careful moving them after they're filled. I got covered in water a few times when I didn't have a good grip and they slipped out of my hands while trying to move them while they were filled with water. There are better methods than what I tried to avoid getting drenched, lol.

Extend the growing season

These work great for protecting tender seedlings against cool spring weather, brisk winds and strong sunshine, allowing me to plant out my tomatoes (for example) 6 weeks prior (April 14th) to the last frost date for my area (May 24th). This means that my early (55 day) tomatoes are ripe and ready to eat by July 1st. If the Kozy Coats are set up 2 weeks ahead of the planting out date, they will warm the soil for the transplants. If the temperature goes below freezing and the Kozy Coat freezes solid, the tomato plant inside will not be harmed although any parts of the plant that may have grown outside the top will be killed back.I have used these or similar products like these for so many years that I can't imagine growing a garden without them.

Good greenhouse replacement

Tomatoes are going great gummies! If you don't have a greenhouse, these work pretty well. But of course climate has a say!
