Q: Has anyone used this with a 5-gal pot (diameter around 15 inches?

It says on the directions that the maximum pot to use is 10.2 inches. and a maximum weight of 44 pounds.

Q: Can I use a 12-inch cast iron skillet on it?

Yes I did it last night. I also used a cast iron griddle and 14 in carbon steel wok. It’s a fantastic piece of equipment.

Q: What country is it made in?

It is make in China. I just got one and it heated up 8oz of cold water on the boil setting in 55sec., I thought amazing. You have to have a magnetized pot (check with a kitchen magnet), and flat bottomed pot, as 5 of my 6 stainless steel pots were not magnetic, so didn't work, even though they were stainless steel nice pots.

Q: Would this unit work for home brewing a 5 gallon batch?

It probably would. I'd just advise you not to set it to the highest temperature for it may overheat and turn off.
