Gravity (2013) by Alfonso Cuarón is an American science-fiction thriller movie, which stars Sandra Bullock as Dr Ryan Stone and George Clooney as Matt Kowalski. Alfonso Cuarón’s movie has received both commercial and critical success, making it one of the highest-grossing films of 2013. Warner Bros’ Gravity received ten nominations at the 86th Academy Awards, out of which it won seven, the most for the ceremony. Alfonso Cuarón’s film has also won a Golden Globe, six Bafta Awards, and seven Critics Choice Awards. Gravity is set in the fictitious space shuttle mission STS-157. The commanding officer is an experienced astronaut Matt Kowalski, who plans to retire after this expedition. He is accompanied by Dr Stone, who is a medical engineer and is on her first space mission. While they are on a spacewalk, Mission Control in Houston warns them that due to a Russian missile strike on a defunct satellite, a huge cloud of debris is moving around in space. The astronauts are told to immediately abort the mission and begin re-entry. However, communication is lost with Mission Control, and a high-speed debris hits the shuttle. Stone is thrown off the spacecraft and is now tumbling through space. Kowalski rescues her, and they return to the shuttle, only to find that it has suffered catastrophic damage. With no other survivors, the two of them plan to reach the International Space Station (ISS). While on their way, Stone talks about her little daughter. When they reach the ISS, they see that the crew has already left. There is a Soyuz remaining, but its parachute has been deployed, thus rendering it useless to go back to Earth. Kowalski and Stone then decide that they will travel to Tiangong, a Chinese space station. However, Kowalski’s leg gets entangled in the Soyuz’s parachute. In order to save Stone’s life, he detaches himself and drifts away. With her oxygen tank running out, will Dr Stone ever be able to make it back home is the question that makes the central drama of the movie. Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity has visual effects that are considered extraordinary. The realism and overall adherence to physical principles of the movie has received praise. The DVD, available in English and Hindi, has a run time of 90 minutes. Released by Warner Bros in 2014, this movie has a U/A (Parental Guidance) rating.
